The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) promises to transform the lives of people with disability; but it is not yet built. Elements are still being designed and developed and others are being tested. A key test of the NDIS is how well it responds to the diversity of Australians with disability.
National Disability Services (NDS) is holding a two-day national conference to explore diversity and its implications for the delivery of supports for people with disability. It will consider the different dimensions of diversity-culture, disability type, gender, age, sexuality and geographic location. How can we ensure that the service system is sensitive to the varied needs and goals of people with disability.
The NDIS should break down the program silos that restrict flexibility and innovation in service delivery. This conference will challenge service providers to think about how to respond to the diverse choices of people with disability; how they can build a workforce drawn from all sections of the population; and how they will structure the supports they offer.
