Human Rights Awards deadline extended to 4 September

The Australian Human Rights Commission has extended the deadline for nominations for this year’s Human Rights Awards to 4 September 2017. The Awards will be presented on Friday, 8 December 2017.

The Human Rights Awards recognise outstanding contribution of  individuals and organisations in promoting and protecting human rights and freedoms. Potential nominees may have taken action to overcome discrimination or infringements of human rights; or encouraged social harmony in areas such as race relations, gender equality and the treatment of children and young people.

The Awards have the following categories:

  • Human Rights Medal
  • Young People’s Human Rights Medal
  • Business Award
  • Racism. It Stops With Me Award
  • Media Award
  • Tony Fitzgerald Memorial Community Individual Award
  • Community Organisation Award
  • Law Award

Previous winners of the Human Rights Medal include Peter Greste, Ian Thorpe, Eddie Mabo, the Rt Hon. Malcom Fraser, Ron Merkel QC, Sister Clare Condon, Dorothy Hoddinott and Elizabeth Evatt.
