A story from the WA Disability Support Awards – Nominations close Friday

With only four days left, now is the time to submit your nominations for the 2017 WA Disability Support Awards.

For artist Susie Waller, winning a Disability Support Award last year was welcome validation of her work supporting people with intellectual disability to express themselves through art. It also reinforced her bond with the person who nominated her - Greg Barr, an Indigenous artist whose personal and artistic growth have improved exponentially since he began working with Susie as his mentor.

Susie won the Excellence in Improving Participation Award for her work running the art program As We Are: Artists Who Have An Intellectual Disability, supported by Nulsen Disability Services. Under her guidance, As We Are has grown from a one-off art award and exhibition into a prestigious event on the WA arts calendar.

“It was great to receive the recognition and confirmation of the work of As We Are and for Nulsen to be recognised for its leadership role and seeing the value of engaging people with intellectual disability,” says Susie.

“Certainly a lot of people heard about it and were congratulating me after the event, reading about it or seeing it online, so it was quite sweet to get that feedback. Greg was really proud and made sure that everyone we met knew about the Award for weeks afterwards; telling everyone that he’d nominated me.”

Download a nomination form (PDFWord) and submit it before 5pm, Friday 24 February 2017. More information is available on the Awards website.

Winners will be announced and presented with their award, including a cash prize of $2000, at a gala dinner on Saturday 29 April 2017 at Crown Perth. Tickets for the gala dinner are available to purchase from the Awards website.
