The idea for Abacus Learning struck Executive Director Lauren Moore 12 years ago.

As a parent of a young son with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lauren took it upon herself to learn Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy – one of the proven therapies available to improve social, motor communication and cognitive skills for children with Autism when applied 15+ hours each week as a therapeutic early intervention approach.

“I myself trained as an ABA therapist and delivered the therapy - firstly for my son and then for other kids,” says Lauren. “I saw it working… But I also saw the stress and strain it could place on families to deliver these therapies themselves. I knew that a centralised place outside of the home could deliver the support both children and families needed. I did everything I could to make this centralised place a reality.”

Abacus Learning has recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary, and Lauren could not be prouder of her 20 employees. They deliver tailored ABA therapy programs to over 30 families at one time in the Hastings-based centre and in schools with customised classroom-based programs. Lauren has created employment pathways for psychology, education and disability students who deliver the therapy.

The services of Abacus Learning are so desired that families travel from around the bay of Melbourne to attend. Some families have even taken temporary residence in Victoria from their interstate homes to attend the centre!

When asked why she feels Abacus Learning was recognised with the NDIS Provider of the Year Award for CareNavigator, Lauren is humble about the achievement.

“It all stemmed from the basic and human desire to give my son and other children what they need to achieve key skills and contentment within their lives,” she said. “In an NDIS context, if that gives people greater choice and control over their lives with disability then I think it’s terrific to be recognised with this wonderful award.”
