Course information
The Certificate II in Continence Promotion and Care has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge to provide client focused continence management and promotion. Providing health care professionals with evidence based, nationally accredited training supports improved patient outcomes and promotes best practice standards. As part of the common core component, students will gain a detailed understanding of:
- The prevalence of bladder and bowel problems across the lifespan
- Normal bladder and bowel function
- Physical, psychological, social and environmental barriers which place people at risk of developing bladder and bowel symptoms
- Practical management solutions to optimise continence in partnership with clients
- Strategies to prevent, manage and treat urinary and faecal incontinence within the scope of the student’s role and responsibilities.
Disability Elective Module
The elective modules allow students to gain greater understanding of the continence needs of different client groups.
The disability elective covers the following topics:
- Prevalence of disability and chronic disease and how conditions can increase the risk of developing bladder and bowel symptoms
- Importance of continence health assessments and the skills to work with other health professionals to undertake a continence assessment
- Barriers faced by people with a disability when trying to access health, rehabilitation and care programs.
Course length
This course is offered in a 100% distance-based format. All training resources are provided. The course will require approximately 40 hours of study including essential reading, external reading and completion of the assessment portfolio. The assessment portfolio also requires some workplace based activities.
Scholarship eligibility requirements
To be eligible for these scholarships applicants must be a:
- personal care worker
- disability support worker
- Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Health Work / Health Practitioner
- enrolled / registered nurse
- allied health professional

Successful applicants must complete the course and assessment within 3 months. The assessment portfolio must be submitted by Thursday, 31st August 2017. If the assessment portfolio is not submitted by this date, the Continence Foundation reserves the right to issue the scholarship recipient an invoice for the total course fee of $690.00.
