NDS resources support providers to take a proactive approach to risk management

What you need to know

  • Risk management involves being aware of events that could potentially affect your service and taking steps to prevent their happening or reduce their likelihood or impact.
  • NDS has developed a range of resources, including templates and checklists, most suited to sole traders, small- and medium-sized organisations, that can be used to document risks.
  • You can customise these resources to meet your needs.

Risk management involves understanding potential events that could affect your service's operations and taking measures to prevent or minimise those risks. The NDIS Commission expects all service providers to have a system in place to identify, monitor and reduce risks, as well as report them when necessary. These systems should be fair, consistent, transparent and safe, while also being simple and manageable according to your needs.

To help meet NDIS requirements for risk management, NDS has created a set of resources. These resources include templates and checklists for documenting risks, which can be customised to suit your requirements. The NDS Risk, Incident, and Complaints Management (RICM) set consists of nine resources, including accessible versions. There is also a film and animation overview that explains the importance of risk, incident and complaints management.

The resources in the RICM set, in pdf and accessible versions, are:

  • What good risk management looks like infographic
  • Risk Management Policy checklist – verification
  • Risk Management Policy checklist – certification
  • Risk Management Plan checklist
  • Worker Health and Safety Management policy
  • Insurance Management policy
  • How we deliver safer services infographic
  • Introductory film: Why is risk, incidents and complaints management important?
  • Animation: Continuous Quality Improvement

There is also an interactive pdf guide that follows an easy-to-use format that covers “What do I do?”, “What do I say?”, “What do I record?” and “What do I report?”. This guide helps providers to set up good systems and process to meet NDIS Commission requirements.

Using these resources, your organisation can be well-prepared to manage risks, take a proactive approach to risk management, and provide safe and high-quality support to people with disabilities. These tools are helpful for both management and staff in the disability sector, and they can be customised to meet your specific needs.?

These resources and our range of Risk, Incidents and Complaints Management resources are on our Quality and Safeguards webpage.
