Revised National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards

In order to protect the public and improve health services, the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS) were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission), in collaboration with the Government, state and territory partners, experts, service providers, and consumers. Health service organisations have implemented these standards as part of their safety and quality systems to ensure patient safety.

The NSQHS have been updated, and the second edition was released in November last year. The changes include:

  • streamlined standards and actions that are easier to understand and implement; and
  • updates to the evidence for actions.
The revised edition also now includes items on:
  • cognitive impairment;
  • mental health;
  • health literacy;
  • end-of-life care;
  • and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

From 1 January 2019, health service organisations will be assessed against the second edition of the NSQHS Standards.

The Commission has developed new resources (eg. user guides, fact sheets, and accrediation workbook ) to assist in implementing the revised Standards..
