Literacy and Numeracy eLearning

People who work in the disability sector will often use literacy and numeracy skills in their day-to-day tasks. Such tasks include reading and understanding important documents (e.g. individual plans, charts) and analysing information (dosages, budgets, dates and times).

National Disability Services (NDS) and etrainu have partnered to create the Literacy and Numeracy for the Disability Workforce eLearning to provide those in the disability sector with the literacy and numeracy skills they need to fulfil their roles.

This eLearning is split into two parts:

The ABCs of Literacy one hour (self paced)

Disability support workers use language and literacy skills to communicate with their colleagues, those involved in the care of participants, and the people they support. They also need to be able to read and understand important documents, such as individual plans, charts, medication doses, etc.

The ABCs of Literacy course provides learners with the necessary tools and skills to confidently read and write documents that apply to their role.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand literacy and how it applies to your role
  • Read, analyse, understand, and write documents clearly and accurately
  • Identify and interpret signs and symbols

The 123s of Numeracy one hour (self paced)

In care and support, numeracy is essential for support workers to be able to handle money, manage medication (e.g. dosages, date and time, etc.), and document records.

Numeracy skills can include:

  • Number skills, e.g. counting
  • Units of measurement, e.g. grams, litres, etc.
